    Some problems with this record as it appears that at some stages Herbert Arthur PIPER was known as Albert Arthur PIPER. e.g. VIC Birth record 4280/1883. The facts that are irrefutable are those relating to his military service in WWI where he was an original ANZAC. His battalion, the 9th., was part of the covering force on the Gallipoli beaches which was among the first to go ashore on 25 April, 1915. He transferred to the Postal Corps on 5 Feb 1916 where he was promoted to Staff- Sergeant and later to Warrant Officer, Class 1. Lest We Forget.

    Enlisted at Gympie QLD. Wounded at least once on 22 May 1915 while in the Dardenelles. Tranferred to the Postal Corps on 5 Feb 1916. Lest We Forget.

    After leaving his residence, 101 Dendy Street, Middle Brighton VIC.

    A former sexton at the Eastern Cemetery informed me many years ago that he believed that the headstone was wooden and that a grass fire had swept the cemetery and wooden headstones were destoyed. At the time of the first burial in this family group, during the 1850s gold rush, substantial material for building anything were in short supply and very expensive and wood was a cheaper alternative.
