    DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT CERES

It is with extreme regret that we have to record a most destructive and calamitous fire which occurred at the farm of Mr. T. Smale, J.P., at Ceres, on Tuesday, about 1 p.m. Mr. Smale has had a most bountiful harvest, and had never gathered in more grain, hay, and other agricultural produce than he had this season. He was looking forward to a considerable return this year to make up for the losses sustained in previous bad seasons, but this fire has upset all his hopes, and not being insured at all, he has lost not only all his year's labor and expenditure as well as all expected profits but nearly the whole of what he was possessed of. This is to be the more regretted as the catastrophe is undoubtedly the result of gross carelessness on the part of a man who has been employed by Mr. Smale for some six or seven years, and there can be no accounting for his foolhardy conduct in this affair, as he has hitherto borne a good character, as an excellent farm hand. It appears that Mr. Smale, on Monday, left instructions that the stubble was to be burnt off some of the paddocks if the day were suitable, but at the same time he impressed on the man that if the day should turn out hot, or if a hot wind prevailed, he was not on any account to think of setting fire to any of the stubble. In the face of this the man, whose name is Samuel Berryman, went deliberately after dinner, in the hottest part of the day, with the thermometer standing at over a hundred in the shade, and a regular "brickfielder" blowing, and fired the stubble in a small paddock not far removed from the homestead. The wind was blowing direct from where the stubble was lighted to the homestead and the stack-yard. The fire was no sooner ignited than it spread with lightning-like rapidity across the paddock into one from which rye grass has not long been mowed, and across this with equal rapidity to the hay stacks. In less time than it takes to write it, these were one mass of flames. The unfortunate man seems to have been utterly prostrated at the sight of the damage he had done, and rushed about without attempting to save anything, although he would have had time to liberate over twenty pigs which were confined in the piggery, and to have removed some drays, buggy, and agricultural implements. Unfortunately Mr. Smale was absent at the Mount Moriac Police Court, and Mrs. Smale had left only shortly before the catastrophe, leaving only Berryman and the servant girl on the premises. The neighbours however rushed to the scene, and bursting into the house succeed in rescuing a chest of drawers and a seer taire containing Mr. Smale's papers and documents. With the exception of a few minor articles of furniture, this was all that was saved out of a smiling homestead which half an hour previously had been surrounded by the results of a bountiful harvest, and was furnished with every necessary for a large and properly conducted farm. The fire having laid hold of the stacks, almost immediately extended to the barn, the threshing machine shed, the piggeries, and a long row of sheds used for various purposes. The blaze and heat were terrific, melting spare brasses belonging to Mr. Smale's threshing machine as effectually as if they had been reduced in a furnace. The poor pigs were literally roasted alive, and some splendid drays and implements standing in the yard were totally destroyed. The house dog was also burnt to death, being chained up, and all that now remains of him is a charred skeleton. The fowls shared the same fate, but fortunately the entire [sic] horse "Reformer" was released before the fire reached his stable. The heat was so intense that in a very few minutes the fire was communicated to the house, and so rapidly did the work of destruction proceed that the neighbors were only able to rescue the few articles we have mentioned. The property destroyed included 50 tons of magnificent hay, a stack of unthreshed wheat, estimated to contain about 100 bags, another stack of oats, containing about an equal quantity of grain; a small stack of barley, estimated as likely to yield 30 or 40 bags; 60 bags of peas, a stack of rye grass, containing about 100 bushels of seed; three cwt. of butter, twenty-one fine pigs, the barn, stables, piggeries, sheds and dwelling house, waggon, drays, buggy, implements, harness, and the household furniture; the whole valued by Mr. Smale at about £1200. The unfortunate gentleman, it appears, has never been in the habit of insuring, and hence his loss is not covered to the value of a penny by insurance policies. The servant girl has also suffered, having lost everything but the clothes she had on at the time. Her wardrobe may appear a slight loss, but to her it is no doubt a very serious one. The greatest sympathy is expressed for Mr. Smale by all his neighbors. He has worked hard for fifteen years on his farm, and had just got it into excellent order when this catastrophe comes and throws him back for years. The farmers around seeing the smoke rode with all haste to the spot, but were only enabled to render very slight service, although they worked with a will. Mr. Smale desires to thank them most heartily for their assistance. The fire and the misfortune of the loser does not seem to have been sufficient to repress the purloining proclivities of some person. In the chest of drawers which were saved there was a considerable sum in gold and notes, the gold consisting of five sovereigns placed in one of the drawers by Mrs. Smale just before she left. Some unprincipled individual undeserving of the name of a man, took advantage of the bustle and excitement to steal three of these. It is stated that the thief is known, and in the interest of justice and all right feeling it is hoped that he will not be allowed to go scatheless. The man Berryman, who was the innocent but blundering cause of this great misfortune to Mr. Smale, has been arrested on a charge of carelessly using fire. He was brought up at the Central police court yesterday and was remanded until Friday.

CARELESS USE OF FIRE - Samuel Berryman was charged with carelessly using fire at Mr. Smale's farm, Ceres on the previous day. On the application of the police, the prisoner was remanded until Friday for the production of evidence.

Geelong Advertiser, 19 Feb 1870, Current Topics column

The circumstances connected with the disastrous fire at Mr. Smale's farm, Ceres, as reported by us on Thursday, were elicited at the Central Police Court yesterday, on the hearing of the charge of careless use of fire preferred against Samuel Berryman, the man who caused the conflagration. The evidence showed gross carelessness, and although Mr. Smale pleaded for a lenient sentence, the bench felt called upon to impose a penalty of 10 pounds, or in default, one month's imprisonment, in order that the case may prove a warning to others similarly situated. The unfortunate man appeared in court much burnt about the arms, face, and body, and no doubt his punishment bodily, mentally, and pecuniarily is heavy, but it is to be hoped the case will have its effect in preventing carelessness in future. That some such example is needed, is shown by the fact that an exactly similar case is reported from Whorooly [sic], near Beechworth, where on the same day as this fire at Mr. Smale's occurred, two brothers named McWalters were burnt out, losing all the crops they had just harvested and all their improvements.

SUDDEN DEATH OF MR. SMALE, J.P.

The residents of this town and district will regret to learn of the very sudden death of Mr. Thomas Smale, J.P., of Edgecombe Farm, Barrabool Hills, which occurred about ten o'clock yesterday morning. The gentleman named proceeded to the Bible Christian Church at Mount Moriac on Wednesday evening, at which place he occupied the chair at a public gathering. During the proceedings he was taken suddenly ill with spasms, and was compelled to retire to the parsonage in connection with the church, and a messenger was despatched to Geelong for Dr. Carstairs. The doctor proceeded to Mount Moriac with all despatch, and prescribed for Mr. Smale. The medicine appeared to give relief to the patient, and the doctor remained with him throughout the night. At seven o'clock yesterday morning Mr. Smale was apparently so far recovered that Dr. Carstairs did not consider that his presence was any longer required, and he left for town. A couple of hours afterwards, Mr. Smale had a second attack to which he succumbed about ten o'clock in the morning. The news of Mr. Smale's death was conveyed to Dr. Carstairs later in the day, but he refused to give a certificate as to the cause of death until the police and the coroner were acquainted with the case. Mr. Heron, the police magistrate, did not consider that it was a case for any magisterial inquiry, and directed the medical gentleman who had seen the deceased to give the relatives a certificate as to the cause of death. The deceased gentleman was a native of North Tamerton, Devon, [sic] England, and died at the age of 60 years. He came to the colony at an early period, and was a resident of the Barrabool Hills district for fully 30 years. As a farmer he was most successful on the old Barrabool Hills, where he held a leading position for many years. In his social life he was extremely well liked, and for a considerable period occupied the position of a member of the Barrabool Shire Council, both at the time the district was under the old road board system, and since the Shires Act came into force. He was a staunch teetotaller, and a leading member of the Bible Christian Church. In all political movements he took a great interest, and he was one of the most energetic agitators for a better system of immigration, which he thought would be of vast benefit to the farmers of the colony.

Employed variously as a diver in the Channel Islands, Dover KEN and in India working as a clearance diver for P & O. Also known to have dived for pearls off the coast of Northern Australia. Eventually settled at Port Fairy VIC where he was also known as a diver. It is believed that he was still an active diver not long before he died so he was probably the oldest diver in the world, particularly when it is considered in the light of the fact that divers did not have a very long life expectancy. At his death an obituary appeared in the Melbourne Herald newspaper, so his exploits must have been well known.

As we hear some difficulty is being met with in obtaining really experienced and trustworthy divers for the work required at the Blencathra and other wrecks it may be mentioned that one of the most experienced divers in the P & O service, Mr. Smale, is now on a visit to his brother of the Barrabool Hills. Mr. Smale has been 15 years in the service of the P & O company and has had 20 years experience as a diver. It was he who recovered the mails from the Rangoon after she had foundered.

    J. SMALE, PEARL FISHERMAN

    THE PEARL FISHERIES

Some time ago it will be remembered, it was announced that Mr. J.
Smale, a diver of considerable experience and the brother of
Mr. T. Smale of the Barrabool Hills had arrived from England and had been engaged for the Pearl Fisheries in Torres Straits. The following letter which was received from him on Friday will be read with interest:-

"Cutter Peveril" Torres Straits, Oct. 15th.

    Dear Sir,
Knowing how great the interest you take in our doings here in Torres Straits, I have ventured to give you a short account of my "experiences" since I left your pretty little town of Geelong. I left Sydney in the Peveril on the 19th. June last and after a long and tedious passage of 39 days we arrived safe and sound at Somerset, Cape York, having had to call in at Cardwell to repair damages sustained in a heavy gale. We remained only a few days at Cardwell which is certainly not the place in which I would choose to dwell as it is but a small place, intensely hot and sandy. But I shall ever look back to my sojourn there with feelings of pleasure for, though a perfect stranger, I was most hospitably entertained. "They took me in" in the best sense of the words. In an attempt to pourtray [sic] the scenery between Cardwell and Somerset would be a task to which I do not feel at all equal. We were constantly passing Islands, rocks and sandbanks in the sea and mountains raising there [sic] lofty heads some thousands of feet into the clouds on the mainland, the people of Queensland may well boast of their mountain scenery, it is something magnificent. Some of the islands also rose a considerable height from the sea level and most of them were covered with verdure of the richest shades of green, even some of the sandbanks were similarly clothed and could boast of trees notwithstanding the sea was constantly washing over them, strange but true. Added to this the islands were indented with beautiful little bays which afford safe havens in all weathers and, as the navigation was too intricate, in these bays we constantly sought shelter at night. When time permitted I put on my diving dress and went in for submarine exploration, the scenery of the deep however, as a rule disappointed me, although I sometimes found my lines cast in pretty places, the scarcity of fish fairly taking me by surprise. However, as I have before stated, we arrived in due course at Somerset, which, I should think, is a very healthy place. The settlement, however, is, I believe, about to be shifted to one of the islands down here, as this will be much more convenient for us pearl fishers. And now with respect to the Pearl Fisheries, there are in these Straits about 50 boats employed, averaging about 3 tons each. Thirty of these carry a diver and apparatus, some two, and they belong to various firms in Sydney and Melbourne, most of the boats have a crew of 5 men besides the diver, the crews being chiefly South Sea Islanders and fine fellows they are in boats, I can assure you, the craft being kept clean as a new pin, indeed a stranger would take them for gentlemen's yachts. There are hundreds of square miles of fishing grounds and although but few shells are being got up at present, there is undoubtedly a rich field for enterprise. The vessels forming "the station" for the boats are moored here and there under the lee of this or that island and the boats are generally absent about a fortnight at a time. When, however, we leave our ship we never know where the search for pearls will take us before we return, a roving commission being granted us, as it is all free selection, there are no vested rights, nor is the residence clause insisted upon. We let go our anchor in the most likely place, and down goes the diver. I have been diving for over 21 years, but I have been over more ground under the water since I have been here than during the whole of my career, but then my former operations have consisted in building foundations for breakwaters etc., blowing up wrecks, blasting rocks, raising sunken vessels, etc. etc. and these operations have of course been confined to certain localities. The depth of water here is from 5 to 10 fathoms and the scenery at the bottom is splendid, the surface is tolerably regular, studded here and there with coral monuments of various hues, intermixed with the far tree and other vegetation, the colours of which are beautifully displayed in the great deep. Sometimes, however, I have had to cross blocks of granite strewn about indiscriminately or piled up like so many cairns. Then again, I have fallen in with caves and caverns which would have delighted the heart of a hermit, and in these I have seen some strange looking denizens in the shape of shell fish. Here, as contrasted with the waters inspected on our voyage, we always have plenty of company under the water, in the shape of fish, some of which are very pretty, while other ugly brutes remind you of the fictions of "Verne" and "Victor Hugo". I was enjoying a long walk through one of the channels a few weeks ago, when I was very much astonished to see a very large alligator in front of me. He must have been over 15 feet long. Now, it is unpleasant enough to drop in with such sort of company on shore, you may guess how I felt when meeting the scaly monster in his own particular realm. He however, did not condescend to notice me; no courtesies were interchanged between us and I - well, I did not resent his want of common politeness more than by "shaking the dust" or rather the water, off my feet as quickly as possible, and retiring to the upper regions. Shortly after this encounter I dropped in with another ugly customer - not a veritable sea serpent but something very like one. I was walking along over a smooth bottom when I saw what appeared to be a very large dead snake. I spurned the reptile with my foot when - whew! - he came at me with a rush. Fortunately my glasses were strong, as it was at these he darted. I drew my knife at him, but he got clear. I have often seen these sorts of things before, but never had one tackle me. Another diver walked slap up to a large shark the other day as it was enjoying a dolce far niente opposite one of the afore mentioned caves, if he did not skedaddle up to the surface again it was a caution to snakes. Such are a few of the sensations we divers have to enjoy. But alligators, snakes and sharks have made me forget all about the 20 boats - 30 of the 50 I have already accounted for. The 20 carry crews of about 14 men each, chiefly natives of the islands in these straits and go where there is shallow water, say about 3 or 4 fathoms. A desirable spot reached, 12 of the crew dart like arrows down through the water cleaving it with great rapidity, and it is highly amusing to see scores of heads bobbing up and down. They obtain large quantities of hacked shell, they work say an hour, then sit smoking their pipes on deck as contentedly as possible. They are splendid divers, can remain under water a long time, and about I shall probably have more to say in my next.

It should be noted that the author of the above letter was not Mr. J. SMALE but Mr. Isaac SMALE. For obscure reasons the Geelong Advertiser used the incorrect initial.

    Obituary

    Mr. Fred Walter

The late Mr. F.J. Walter, whose death was announced in Thursday's issue, was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Walter. He was born at Barrabool Hills, Geelong, 52 years ago. When he was two years of age his parents removed to the Noradjuha district, but 38 years later they removed to this district, having acquired the "Heathfield" Estate near Lake Mundi. They resided at "Woodlands" on the Penola road, now owned by Messrs Chaffey Bros., and the members of the family attended the Casterton School, and consequently they are well known to many district residents. Mr. Walter had leased his Wimmera land, and after occupying "Heathfield" for four years he went back to Noradjuha, and "Heathfield" was leased until 20 years ago, when it was taken over by his son, the late Mr. Fred J. Walter, who successfully carried on the property till about 12 months ago when he sold it to Mr. Colin Cameron of "Dunan" Henty, and he himself purchased "Fernside" property at Bahgallah from Mr. D. McPhee, and also acquired the farm on the Wando Vale road known as "Sunny Hills" from the trustees of the late Mr. McLaughlin. The deceased was married 20 years ago, but 11 years ago last October his wife died unexpectedly whilst on a visit to his people at Noradjuha. She left two daughters and one son, as follows:- Freda, now aged 17 years; Alice, now 16 years; and Stanley, the baby, now 12 years. Mr. Walter, although busy with his property, did not neglect the interests of his daughters and son, and showered upon them a lavish affection. When they grew up to school age he purchased a house in Casterton and made his home in the town, and his main reason for disposing of "Heathfield" was that he could not be home as often as he wished. He usually enjoyed good health, but some years ago had been under an operation for appendicitis, from which he made a complete recovery. On the morning of Monday, 9th. ult. whilst milking his cow he was seized with severe pains in the stomach, and it was found necessary to operate on him. The operation was a serious one, and was performed by Dr. Douglas, of Hamilton, assisted by Drs. R.H. Hill and J.G. Sleeman. It appeared to be successful, and for several days the patient was reported to be holding his own, but was never pronounced out of danger, and early on Thursday morning last he suddenly passed away, having faithfully served his day and generation, leaving behind him a name honored throughout the district for uprightness of life and conduct.

During his illness, he was visited by several of his brothers, and everything that was possible was done for his comfort. In addition to his doubly bereaved children, he leaves three sisters and six brothers to mourn his loss. They are as follows:- Bertha (Mrs. Fowler, widow of the late Rev. H. Fowler); Hetty (Mrs. Nitschke), of Noradjuha, and Phenie (Mrs. L. Cranage), of Horsham; Bert, of Berwick, Gippsland; Thomas, of Coleraine; Ellis, of Ballarat; Sydney and Norman, both of Noradjuha, the latter being the owner of the original homestead.

The funeral took place at the Casterton New Cemetery on Friday afternoon, when there was a very large gathering, the outside districts being well represented. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. J.G. Searfe, in the absence of Rev. A. Bligh, who was attending the Methodist conference. Mr. Searfe said that all sections of the community would learn of the death of Mr. Walter with deep regret. He was a man of great integrity and would be sadly missed. He was a townsman whose cheerful kindness and Christian spirit was worthy of emulation. The body was enclosed in an oak casket with silver mountings, and was carried to its last resting place by four of his brothers: Ambrose, Norman, Sydney and Thomas and Messrs Cecil and Herman Hill, brothers of his late wife. Mr. W.J. Peden had charge of the mortuary [sic] arrangements.

    In Memoriam

SERVICE TO LATE MR. F.J. WALTER

On Sunday evening, at the Casterton Methodist Church, an In Memoriam service to the late Mr. F.J. Walter was conducted by the Rev. A. Bligh. The pulpit had been draped with purple, relieved with bunches of white flowers, intermixed with purple. The singing was led by the male choir, of which Mr. Walter had been one of the prominent members, and Miss Ida Spurrell was the organist. The hymns chosen were most appropriate, and embraced some which the deceased had often lent assistance in rendering. Several of the brethren of the Sons of Temperance Lodge attended as a mark of respect to a deceased brother.

The Rev. A. Bligh read a biographical sketch of the deceased which stated that for many years he had been an active member of the Methodist Church. He took an active part in having a preaching place established at Lake Mundi, showing the value he placed on the preaching of the Gospel. His home was always open to ministers and local preachers, who were on innumerable occasions cheered by his hospitality. Eleven years ago his beloved wife was called Home to God, and during that trying time and in later years he proved his unfailing love and interest in the lives of his children, who were always dear to his heart, and he proved to be a "Father amongst Fathers." Ten years ago, largely in the interests of his family he moved into Casterton, during which time he had been a member and loyal worker in the Church. Sunday morning found him regular and punctual in his attendance at the services, and he helped in singing of praises to God. He had for some years been a trustee and the secretary of the Church Trust, and a more capable and thorough secretary one could not wish to find. At the last Quarterly meeting he was unanimously elected Circuit Steward. They looked forward to his term of office, but God had called him to a higher stewardship, and in this higher office he now served. Although we shall miss him, we would not (if we could) call him back, for God has designed some better thing for him. Mr. Walter also served the Church as a member of the male choir. He invariably took some prominent part, and his gifts and enthusiasm acted as an inspiration to the younger members of the choir. He sings no longer in the male choir, but rather in the choir of Heaven. With a new power he sings a new song. We are familiar with his last sudden illness. With a brave heart and grim determination he faced the operation from which he never recovered. In the days of his illness our brother held on to God in prayer, and having entered into this communion here, we are confident that he now enjoys a fellowship made perfect - that he is now with God in a brighter world. We cherish the memory of our late member. He speaks to us still. To the members of his family we extend our deepest sympathy, and pray that God who does not err, and Who is Love, will ever sustain and strengthen, and by His Holy Spirit give Divine comfort until the day break and the shadows of earthly limitations flee away.

Following this, the preacher delivered a most interesting address, the text being taken from Phil. 3:20 - "Our citizenship is in Heaven." He pointed out that there things that came to us that we never could get accustomed to, no matter how familiar. Death was one of these. Christ shared in our experiences as He wept over the grave of His friend Lazarus. It was only in the Christian faith that we found comfort when sorrows confront us. Life was a thoroughfare, leading to our heavenly home. The call comes to all to prepare for the grand inheritance, and as we enter this eternal kingdom and pass to the inheritance of our citizenship in heaven, we cannot fail to leave behind us a gracious influence - footprints that some forlorn and shipwrecked brother seeing shall take heart again. Nothing is more grand or noble than that others may so see Christ in us that when we have entered more fully into the inheritance of our heavenly citizenship it may be said of us - His God shall be my God, and his Saviour my Saviour.

To live for those who love you,
For those who think you true,
For the Heaven that lies above you,
    And waits your coming too;
For the cause that needs assistance,
For the wrong that needs resistance,
And the good that you can do.

He hoped that all would have grace to follow in the footsteps of the Master, and win the citizenship of Heaven.

Mr. A.G. Finlayson feelingly rendered the solo "He wipes the tear from every eye", and at the close of the service the congregation stood with bowed heads while Miss Spurrell played "The Dead March."

    Notes:

    Military:
Enlisted as Reginald SMALE and his calling was stated to be seaman. Appears to have deserted from the Langwarrin Camp in 1916. He was removed from strength on 22 Dec 1916. Was also found to be unwell with Ghonorrea after joining the Army and that is probably the reason he was at Langwarrin where there was a Venereal Diseases Hospital. After his capture by the military police he was court-martialled and found guilty. The punishment he received is unclear in the records but a newspaper report details the fact that he was sentenced to 180 days of detention with hard labour. His mother wrote to the Army in 1924 asking about her son who had possibly re-enlisted in the AIF. The army was unable to help her.
