Woman Killed at Ballarat

Ballarat, Feb. 23

Struck down by a motor car when she stepped from the Sturt Street garden to cross the road towards Ballarat Base Hospital, this afternoon, Phenie Gertrude CRANAGE, aged about 52 years, married woman, who resides at 4 Webster Street, died in hospital a few minutes later from her injuries. The motor car was driven by Norma Eileen GRAY, a young woman, who resides at 13 Raglan Street, and she suffered shock and abrasions and was admitted to hospital for observation. In swerving to avoid the woman the motor car almost instantaneously crashed into an electric light standard, and the force of the impact completely smashed the pole at its base.

Talented Singer

Mr. Stanley F. Walter, of Paraparap who was a successful vocalist at the South Street Eisteddfod, where he just missed the grand aggregate for the whole festival in the men's vocal sections. He was placed first in men's sacred solo (94 points); second in the baritone solo (89); third in the men's vocal championship, two items (187); third in the Leider section for ladies and gentlemen (95); and hon. mention in the section for men who had never won a first prize at South Street (88).

The adjudicator made some complimentary comments, such as; "Good rich voice"; "good clear-cut enunciation"; "moods and tempi well expressed"; "a sense of dignity and reverence displayed" (in the sacred song); "you play your voice nicely"; "tone well supported on breath"; "excellent diction and vocal line"; "a very artistic and nicely restrained performance." "You caught the spirit of the old patriarch, and sang with fine devotional spirit and effect." These latter remarks applied to his singing of "Lord God of Abraham" ("Elijah") in the men's championship. Mr. Walter is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. F.J. Walter of Casterton. His parents died when he was quite young. He was educated at the Geelong College, and subsequently he studied at the Longerenong and the Dookie Agricultural Colleges. At Dookie his father was one of the original students. All his vocal training has been under the direction of Mrs. R.M. Black, who, during the past three years in particular, has put him through an intensive course. In some of the sections at South Street there were more than 100 competitors, including talented vocalists from every State in the Commonwealth and from New Zealand.

Father and son in tune

Denis Walter appears on TV today with his Dad, Stan. "It's taken Stan 77 years to get his first break on TV," Denis joked.

Father and son will sing a duet, Bless This House, on Channel Nine's In Melbourne Today. "My dad is a bass baritone like myself," Denis said. "So my deep voice wasn't caused by an accident at birth - it is actually inherited!"

Host Ernie Sigley invited Stan on to the show after hearing him sing after a Footscray - Geelong game. "Ernie thought Stan would make a perfect Father's Day guest," Denis explained.

Mr Charles C Ching, of 98 McKillop Street, Geelong, who died on Friday, was well known throughout the Geelong district.

He was born at Barrabool in 1865, and his family went to Irrewillipe, near Colac, in 1867. Mr Ching engaged in grazing and dairying there, and was connected with Holy Anglican Church, and was secretary and also Grand Master of the local branch of the I.O.O.F.

Mr Ching later was engaged in pastoral pursuits at Nalangil, and he was associated with a number of local societies and also the Union Church there.

In 1910 he purchased the Mt. Mercer homestead, an extensive grazing property. He took a prominent part in the formation of the Ballarat branch of the Victorian Country Party and Farmers' Union, and took an active part in patriotic movements during the last war.

In 1921 he retired to Highton, where he was president of the local progress association, and secretary of St. John's Church of England and Treasurer of Geelong branch of the Church Missionary Society, a position which he occupied for 18 years.

In 1931 he took up residence in McKillop Street. At the time of his death he held a number of offices in connection with Chirst Church, Geelong. He was Vicar's Churchwarden, Treasurer, Synod representative and Parochial Nominator.

A keen bowler, Mr Ching was president of East Geelong Bowling Club for three years.

His death at the age of 75 years, followed an illness over the past 18 months. He leaves a widow and family of three daughters and one son.

A special service was held at Christ Church on Saturday morning, conducted by the vicar, the Rev. D M Deasey, assisted by the vicar of St. Paul's Geelong, The Rev. Dr. E Griffith. Afterwards the funeral took place to the private crematorium, Fawkner. Reference to Mr Ching's association with Christ Church will be made at services next Sunday by the Rev. D M Deasey.

Sudden Death at Ceres

Miss A. Walter, of Ceres, who died suddenly at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. G.T. Merritt, Torongo, on Monday, was one who, over a period of years gave excellent service to the district in numerous and various ways.

She had been a resident for 20 years and her interest in, and services given to organisations to which she had been attached were outstanding in the capabilities she displayed in the many duties assigned to her.

In addition to public attachments, she gave a record of service to the Methodist Church and its calls. In this and in all her engagements she exhibited a strong, devout, gracious and kindly Christian character by which she won the respect and friendliness of all sections of the district.

The funeral service at the Noble Street Methodist Church yesterday morning was largely attended and the Rev. S.M. Box, who conducted the service paid a fitting tribute to Miss Walters' (sic) life and associations in the district and Church.

Miss Walter formerly lived in the Casterton district.

Both her parents are deceased and she is survived by a sister, Mrs. G.T. Merritt and brother, Mr. S. Walter and to them and all relatives her many friends in this district extend sincere sympathy.
