The
Relatives of Frederick Lionel WALTER

Images from Bradworthy,
Devon
My WALTER ancestors and most of my west-country forebears
can be traced to a small area spanning the upper reaches of the Tamar
River, enclosing the adjoining villages of Bradworthy in the north-west
of Devon and Kilkhampton and Morwenstow in the north-east of Cornwall.
Set out below are some images of Bradworthy.

| The beautiful slate headstone on the grave of my 3rd.
great-grandparents William WALTER (1757-1827) and
Ann (m.n. BRIMACOMBE, 1766-1837).
This headstone was carved by the famous west-country stonemason Mark
WESTAWAY, whose work makes this cemetery very notable indeed.
The distinguishing features on many headstones in this place are the
great depth of the carving and the sheer beauty of the work. This
particular stone is only about 25 to 30 mm thick. |
The three images
above were provided by Ian WALTER |

Sacred to the Memory of WILLIAM
WALTER
YEOMAN of this Parish; who departed this life on the 18th
day of Septr, in the year of our LORD 1827. AGED 70 years. |
_______________ * _______________ |
BELOV'D I lived, in peace I dy'd,
FRIENDS forbear to weep 'tis vain,
MY Wife so dear and Children too,
PREPARE for Death for all must die,
LET Christ with peace then fill your hearts, |
MY life I ask'd but was deny'd;
YOU cannot call me back again.
FAREWELL! for I must bid Adieu:
AND sleep in dust as well as I.
AND seek that grace which he imparts. |
______________________ * ______________________ |
SILENT Grave to thee I trust,
KEEP it safe. Oh! Sacred Tomb, |
THIS precious pearl of worthy dust:
UNTIL a Wife comes here for room. |
______________________________________________________ |
ALSO in Memory of ANN, Wife of the
above named Wm.
WALTER; who (after a painful illness) died on the first day of
June, in the year of our LORD 1837. AGED 71 years. |
It is decreed that all mankind must die,
Death's fatal dart doth strike them to the grave,
In earth's dark womb our lifeless corpse must lay,
The trump will sound and then a voice is heard;
Farewell dear Children, live in peace and love.
|
And in the dust their mortal Bodies lie:
The young, the old, the rich, the poor and brave.
Until the great and awful Judgement day.
"Arise ye dead, come forth to meet the LORD."
That we may meet at GOD's right-hand above. |

Headstone of Tryphena WALTER (1831-1853)
Parish Churchyard
|
| Another example of the work of Mark WESTAWAY, master
stonemason. My great-grandaunt Tryphena, an older sister of my great-grandfather
Ambrose Willcock WALTER (1833-1915) died a few weeks before he and
several brothers, sisters and other relatives left Plymouth, Devon
for the Port Phillip, Victoria. I wonder if she planned to travel
with that group or was she planning to stay and perhaps emigrate to
the Colony of Victoria with her parents in 1855 or join her sister
Elizabeth Ann who emigrated to Canada in about 1857? |
